Tips to Eliminate Nasty Dishwasher Smells

Lemons, lemons and more lemons: Lemons are full of citric acid, which is great for cleaning and getting rid of unpleasant odours. There are a couple of ways that you can use lemons to make cleaning your dishwashers easier, and to keep it from getting smelly.

One way is to use the peels during a cycle; the peels will prevent any gross smells, plus they’ll leave your dishes smelling fresh after the cycle. Place them in your utensil holder to keep them from flying around during the cycle. Don’t want to spend time peeling lemons? You can also use the lemon as well; just cut it in half, place it somewhere securely in the dishwasher, and then turn on a cycle.

Another way to use lemons to get rid of the smells in your Bosch dishwasher is to use lemon juice. Pour a cup in before you turn on a cycle. This has the same effect as using lemon peels or a half lemon, but without having to find somewhere to secure it. Plus, it’s easier to clean since the juice will drain along with the water after the cycle. Any of these lemon methods will also help to get rid of stains and stuck on food in your dishwasher.

Fishy smells: If your water source is close to a lake or river, it can result in a fishy smell in your dishwasher. Try keeping your dishwasher’s door open for a couple of hours to air it out. If this doesn’t work, run an empty cycle with baking soda (vinegar will work as well). This should help neutralize the fishy odour.

Avoid food build up: One of the most common reasons for bad smells accumulating in dishwashers is because food particles have built up inside. One way to avoid food build up is to scrap the larger food particles off of your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. This is especially helpful if you don’t use your dishwasher every day, so there will be less food particles rotting in your dishwasher.

Another reason for food build up in the dishwasher is because there wasn’t enough water used during the cycle. This can happen if water from the same supply is being used elsewhere, like the kitchen sink for instance. Avoid turning any faucets in the kitchen while the dishwasher is in use to ensure that it is getting enough water to clean the dishes. If this continues, it could be an indicator that the dishwasher just isn’t releasing enough water during cycles. Give the team at Ottawa Pro a call for a diagnostic and repair.

Clean the interior: Just like any other mess, when it starts to smell it means it’s time to clean. If your dishwasher is producing foul smells, it’s a sign that it needs to be cleaned. Use an all-purpose cleaner and a clean cloth to scrub the inside of your dishwasher to remove stains and any food debris inside. Then run a cycle on empty with either baking soda or vinegar; this will get rid of remaining stains, bacteria, and neutralize the nasty smells.
