Five Common Signs of Issues with Refrigerators

One of the biggest expenses most families have is food. Keeping fresh produce, meats and dairy products cold is extremely important. If your refrigerator isn’t working properly or your freezer gets too warm, food can spoil and you’ll have to throw it out. Not only is it expensive, but it can be potentially dangerous to your health. Here are the top five reasons that a refrigerator repair specialist should be called in to service your fridge.

  1. The Fridge Isn’t Running – First of all, make sure the refrigerator is plugged in. This might seem obvious, but if there’s no electricity flowing to the unit, it won’t work. Another thing to check is that the temperature adjustment is set properly. It’s common to bump the dial while taking things out or putting them in. Set it to the proper level and wait to see if it comes back on. If there are not obvious problems that you can see, it’s time to call in someone who can troubleshoot the entire appliance.
  2. It’s Just Not Cold Enough – The obvious thing to check here is that the temperature setting is correct. If it is, then you’re going to have to do a little more investigation. If the freezer is also warming up, it could be a defrost problem caused by the evaporator coil on the back of the unit being frozen. Remove the excess ice and see if that fixes the problem. If this isn’t the case, it may be an issue with the thermostat or the compressor. Either of these things will mean that you’re going to have to call in a professional to do the repairs.
  3. It’s Way Too Cold – If you’re finding frozen veggies, milk and other items, chances are you’ve got the temperature setting way too low. Check the dial and make sure that it’s not set on the lowest setting possible. Most times, somewhere in the middle is perfect, although it really does depend upon the age and type of refrigerator. If you adjust it and your food is still freezing, call in a pro to take a look.
  4. There’s A Puddle Of Water – Waking up in the morning and finding a puddle of water in front of your fridge isn’t fun, to say the least. It’s not just annoying to step in the puddle, either, it’s a sign that something is wrong. For the most part, this is a symptom of a clogged defrost drain, which is something you can take care of yourself if you have a side-by-side model. However, this is not the case for built-in models, freezer tops or bottom freezer units. The drain is actually inaccessible in these and you’ll need the help of a repairman to get it unplugged.
  5. It’s Making Weird Noises – The nature of the problem depends entirely upon what type of noise your fridge is making. If you’re hearing a lot of clunking and banging, it’s a good sign that the compressor isn’t working properly. If you’re hearing more of a high-pitched squealing sound, chances are the fan is on the fritz. The reality is, either one of these problems will require a phone call to a professional. Repairs of this nature are not something the average homeowner can do themselves.
